The Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic, informally known as Georgia (Georgian: საქართველო sakartvelo, IPA: [sɑkʰɑrtʰvɛlɔ]), is a country in the Caucasus. It is one of 21 national republics of the Soviet Union. Its capital and largest city is Tbilisi, formerly known as Tiflis. It is governed by the Communist Party of Georgia, a subordinate branch of the All-Union Communist Party based in Moscow.
