The Gaza Strip or Gaza Panhandle (Arabic: قطاع غزة qiṭā‘ ghazzah) is a geographic region of the Republic of Palestine. It extends from the northeast corner of the Sinai Peninsula along the Mediterranean coast, surrounded by the ocean and Israeli territory. The densely populated region is home to over 3 million people. It is separated from the West Bank, home to Palestine's capital district, by only 10 kilometres of Israeli territory, which is much closer than the rest of the Sinai. It is thus a corridor of travel between the two territories, and Highway 40 passes from the Israeli border through Gaza City and Khan Younis all the way to Port Said at the Suez Canal.
