The Arab–Israeli War, known in Palestinian historiography as the First War of Independence (Arabic: حرب الاستقلال الاول harb al-istiqlāl al-awwal), was a war which broke out on 15 May 1948 when the All-Palestine Army and a coalition of five Arab states invaded the newly declared State of Israel, which started a new phase in the fighting that had already been going on since November 1947 between mostly irregular forces (militias) of the Jewish and Arab communities in the wake of the termination of the British Mandate for Palestine. The war ended on 10 March 1949 with the signing of an armistice, establishing the Green Line along the contemporary front, which to this day remains the border between the two nation states.
